Ants

Small insects can become a surprisingly persistent problem when a colony establishes itself around a home or property.

Main risk

Nuisance

Signs to look for

  • A repeated trail of ants moving between a nesting area and a source of food or water.

  • Ants may appear around kitchens, cupboards, windows, walls, paving and garden areas.

  • Repeated activity in the same locations often indicates that the source of the problem has not been addressed.

Why ants keep returning

Ant colonies can exist away from the area where ants are actually being seen. Removing the visible ants may therefore provide only temporary relief if the surrounding colony and conditions remain unchanged.

What attracts them

  • Accessible food can make a property more attractive to ants.

  • Moisture may also support activity.

  • Protected nesting areas can provide places for colonies to establish. Cleaning food spills, sealing containers and reducing unnecessary moisture may help reduce activity.
